Review:
Gospel music veteran CeCe Winans’ latest solo release, Thy Kingdom Come, reminds listeners why this multi-Grammy, Stellar, and Dove award winner his received such high acclaim. Winans offers fourteen brand new songs for worship on this power-packed album that is magnificent from start to finish. CeCe’s latest solo album, her eighth, follows in a long line of gold and platinum-certified solo albums created since her days of singing with her brother as the duo BeBe and CeCe Winans (although the two have reteamed after fifteen years to bring the album Still to fans for an October 6 release date).
Thy Kingdom Come opens with the compelling track, We Welcome You (Holy Father), a great call to worship song declaring the intent and purpose of corporate worship. The next, Forever, is based on Psalm 145:2 and declares the eternal nature of a relationship with the King of kings. In this great worship track, CeCe gives a lot of the melody in the chorus of the song to background vocalists, something she is known for successfully utilizing in live performances and in various places throughout this album. The third offering, the title track, speaks of God’s sovereignty in the midst of a fallen world. The resolution of the song is a prayer of trust, commitment, and hope.
Other highlights include the reggae-pop track, Worthy, which declares the worth of the believer as being found in the fact that Christ has counted us worthy and Waging War, the first single from this project to be sent to radio, which reminds listeners that the battle is already won. One of my favorites from the album is You’re the One. I had the privilege to hear CeCe perform this rhythmically diverse and beautifully arranged anthem shortly after the album’s release, and it left me speechless. This song precedes The Coast is Clear, a song written by Winans’ son Alvin Love III, which is just another proof that the gift of music is truly a family affair.
There are too many outstanding tracks to describe them all in this review. I cannot say enough good about the artistry of CeCe Winans. When I heard Winans’ first solo album, Alone in His Presence (1995), I did not think I would ever hear anything so stunning ever again. However, Winans still continues to impress. Winans’ voice has never sounded better, and her heart for worship shines through every track on this beautifully crafted album.
