On January 27, 2009, many people throughout our church, our community, and our state were left in the dark due to a minor ice age due to an intense winter storm that darkened an estimated 769,000 homes across Kentucky.  Since the passing of the storm, 36 people state wide officially have lost their lives from the storm’s aftermath due to carbon monoxide poisoning, hypothermia, and other causes., as of February 13, 2009.  We do pass our condolences to the families that lost their loved ones; for us Christians, we also need to be asking ourselves, “Did I ever meet one of these people, did I miss a chance to ask them about their plan for salvation, and did I miss out on a chance to share Jesus Christ with them?”  I personally did not know any of these people, but I do pray that they did know the truth about Jesus Christ, and that they did accept Him as their Savior.

It was a blessing seeing people that did not know each other opening their doors to strangers to help their fellow man survive the ice age.  Many communities have seen much damage, but within these same communities, there has been a renewed since of hope in many people.  This is the time when the church should step forward and start reaching out in our community to bring people back into churches across the state.  It only takes a few moments to ask a friend, a co-worker, a family member, or even someone you just met through the ice age and start melting the ice and inviting them to stop by and visit your church home.  They do not always need to start visiting just for the Sunday morning worship services; invite them to come on Wednesday evenings for some prayer time and bible studies, or even to try one of our small groups that we have on Sunday evenings.  Just remember that the church is its people; that are you, the ministers, and me.  We are all part of the church and we all need to be finding ways to help people know the truth of Jesus Christ every day.

After the storm, it was great seeing how many of the WBC members were finding ways to keep in touch and keep track of how their fellow congregation was doing.  We were thankful that our church still has power and that God blessed by being a church that wanted to be open as much as we could follow the storm.  Thanks to our worshiping Him, we were blessed with visitors this past Sunday (February, 1st).  The time and efforts that we as individuals and as a church put forth in service to our Savior often seam difficult and sometimes unfruitful; but we as mere mortals will only see the true effects of outreach to others when we are able to lay our crowns at the feet of Jesus as he acknowledges that He know you and thanks you for the work you do in His behalf each day.  So now that we are seeing the ice melt away here in our community, we now need to be active in helping melt the ice for the lost and help them clear the path to Jesus Christ and their salvation.
